What I’m Viewing

Reading Time: 2 Minutes

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to another post of your favourite personal finance blogger.

Yes! It’s that time again… time for another episode offfff, “What I’m Viewing”.

A short selection of articles, videos and links I’ve found useful in the last couple weeks or so.

Without further ado, here they are:

This Is What It Takes to Be in the 1% Around the World

Ever wondered what it takes to be a one-percenter? Well, Bloomberg breaks this down to put some perspective. If you’re in India, a (relatively achievable) USD 81,000 p.a. will get you there. Compare this to a whopping USD 891,000 if you live in the oil rich U.A.E.

Oh and it’s USD 239,000 in Australia and USD 478,000 in the US of A.

Nothing but nothing makes humans feel better or worse than comparing ourselves to each other!

Arnold Schwarzenegger 2018 – The Speech That Broke The Internet

This Youtube video has been making the grounds lately, if you haven’t seen it or need a quick energy boost – give it a listen!

It’s actually an updated version of a speech he gave many, many years ago – but there’s a reason Arnie went from a tier elite body-builder to a tier elite Hollywood star, to the governor of the 5th largest economy in the world (California).

He must be doing something right!

The Greatest Investor You’ve Never Heard Of: An Optometrist Who Beat The Odds To Become A Billionaire

Have you heard of Herbert Wertheim? Yeah me neither!

Until I read this article that is.

Herb is a USD 2.3 billionaire and probably the largest customer of discount brokers Fidelity and Schwab.

Forbes breaks down his life story and how he did it in this captivating article.

Hint: understanding your sphere of influence, having a high conviction and time, lots and lots of time.

Berkshire Hathaway Annual Letter 2018

Oh and if you think that Herb’s way is vaguely familiar… that’s because he’s a Buffet devotee.

You too can be one… if you know where to look!

And the perfect place is the annual shareholder letters Buffet releases, here’s the 2018 version.

Mind you, Buffet has changed his style and language to appeal to a more mass-market audience in recent years, given the popularity of the letters.

The real gems are in the earlier versions, well worth a visit.

10 Breakthrough Technologies 2019

If you’re a tech buff – then get onto this article pronto!

It’s a list of the cutting edge technology to come in 2019 as highlighted by MIT.

To be expected, plenty on the list such as “Custom Cancer Vaccines” and “ECG On Your Wrist” are health and biotech related, but a couple others such as “Carbon Dioxide Catcher” and “New Wave Nuclear Power” sound more like the work of a mad scientist.

The key here though, from a financial perspective – is to understand which ones have mass-market appeal and get in early as an investor.

Short and snappy this week boys and girls!

Excuse me for that, as MrsFrugalSamurai and I have a long drive down the South Coast ahead of us.
