Reading Time: 2 Minutes
Man that was a long drive!
You see, MrsFrugalSamurai decided on a whim that we were tagging along to a bunch of MiniFrugalSamurai’s friends (and their parents) for the long weekend.
This meant that BabyFrugalSamurai and TheFrugalSamurai (myself) also tagged along with MrsFrugalSamurai and MiniFrugalSamurai to our nations capital – Canberra.
Strewth, that’s some messy writing.
What’s also messy was the UTTER. SHITHOUSE. TRAFFIC. JAM. coming out of Sydney.
We basically came to a standstill for an hour or so on the city outskirts.
What is normally a 3 hour drive, turned into a monster 5 and a half hour trek – needless to say, I’m pretty whacked.
BUT.
I realize I need to keep up the posts for my hungry fans out there.
This is why I am posting this at the earliest opportunity I can get… after the kids are asleep, in a pitch black hotel room…

You rabid animals – I love you all.
Anywho – on the way down, especially during that epic traffic jam, I could see in the faces of all the drivers who were utterly pissed off.
Everyone NEEDED to go somewhere, yesterday.
And it’s true – I mean who loves sitting in traffic on the highway?
Furthermore, despite this weekend being categorized as double demerits for traffic offences, the sheer number of people we drove by being caught by the police for (I’m guessing) speeding was quite stunning.
I know, I know, we all love a good flirt driving at 112km/hr, a couple of k’s just above the speed limit – to try and eek out that small 2km/hr gain for as long as possible.
I’ve done it heaps of times, too many times to count.
But driving today really reminded me of an investment lesson.
One of my favourite finance writers is Morgan Housel, and he often refers to Bill Miller as the active fund manager who despite only achieving average performance throughout his career – still ranked in the top 4% of fund managers in a 30 year period.
This really highlights the advantages of a long-term consistent approach to investing.
Sure you can take on additional risk and speed up a bit more for some extra gains, maybe with leverage, maybe with exotic instruments or alternative asset classes – but it’s a dangerous game, and there’s a good chance you’ll get caught out.
Better to just put everything on cruise control, a few km’s below the speed limit and just let it ride.
After all, a few extra km’s to shave a few minutes off your journey at the risk of losing your licence (or worse)?
That’s just messy.
Have a happy and safe long weekend everyone!
